Balanced Soil: The Relationship Between pH, Salinity and Crop Health

Soil condition is crucial to the success of any crop, as healthy soil ensures optimal plant growth and a high-quality harvest.

Suelo en Equilibrio: La Relación entre pH, Salinidad y la Salud de los Cultivos

The condition of the soil is crucial to the success of any crop, as healthy soil ensures optimal plant growth and a high-quality harvest. Two key factors in soil health are pH and salinity, which, if not properly controlled, can severely limit plant development and soil sustainability.

The Role of pH in Soil

pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and has a significant impact on plants. Most crops prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6–7), allowing essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to be more readily available. A pH outside this range makes nutrient uptake more difficult and can cause deficiencies that hinder growth.

When pH is too low, elements such as aluminium and manganese can reach toxic levels, damaging the roots. High pH limits the availability of nutrients such as iron, zinc and phosphorus, causing deficiencies even when these nutrients are present in the soil.

The Effects of Soil Salinity

Excessive salt accumulation in the soil makes it more difficult for roots to absorb water, leading to water stress. It also affects soil structure, reducing its ability to retain water and air. Crops such as citrus, maize, alfalfa and tomatoes are particularly sensitive to saline soils. This is common in arid regions or areas where irrigation water has a high salt content, which can degrade the soil if not properly managed.

SULTECH Technology: An Integrated Solution for Optimal Soils

AFEPASA has developed SULTECH technology to improve soil quality efficiently. SULTECH products optimise the use of sulphur, which reduces soil alkalinity as it oxidises and forms sulphuric acid, bringing pH levels closer to the optimal range. This improves the availability of essential nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, promoting plant growth.

In addition, SULTECH is effective in reducing soil salinity by facilitating the leaching of salts through irrigation. This process helps restore water balance and prevent osmotic stress in plants, particularly in arid regions where salinity is a persistent challenge.

Benefits of SULTECH for Farmers

SULTECH products enable farmers to improve soil pH and reduce salinity, resulting in healthier and more productive soils. This technology optimises resources, reducing the need for additional inputs and promoting more environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
