Project to develop new sulphur fertilisers

Sulphur is the chemical element preferred by farmers, not only because of its fungicidal properties, but also because of its nutritional value and the many benefits it has for the soil and plants.

Therefore, in the R&D&I project carried out, a series of products were suggested, in granulated form and in concentrated suspension, seeking to combine the benefits of sulphur with other nutritional elements (N, P, K, B, Fe, Cu, etc.).

During the development of the R&D&I project, it was found that, for solid prototypes, the main challenge was the conditioning of micronised sulphur in order to be able to work safely, due to the problems associated with explosive atmospheres. The products in concentrated suspension form posed the technological challenge of making sulphur compatible with different components within the same formula, seeking stability through the use of different additives.

The products obtained showed field test yields in the order expected, improving pH, conductivity and salinity conditions in terms of soil conditioning. They also showed an improvement in crop yields compared to fertilization without elemental sulphur.

The project has been developed with the help of the Centre for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) of the Ministry of Industry, Economy and Competitiveness, and co-financed by the European Union (ERDF Funds) through the Intelligent Growth Operational Programme (2014-2020)".
